Ghana
When the Dutch summer was about to end, I left home for a 3 months' journey around West Africa, that would both start and end in Accra. A total of 57 fantastic days were spent in Ghana alone, the easygoing country that is often referred to as "Africa for beginners". And indeed, Ghana might well be the perfect choice for first timers who want to experience Black Africa to the fullest; almost hasslefree, and away from mass tourism. But that doesn't mean adventurous and hardened travellers will have no options, too. For instance, community based tourism has been developed in many rural parts of the country, and taking part in it is mostly highly rewarding - as I experienced. Just finding a way to those villages, the encounters with the local Chiefs. The local guides, who always proudly present their culture, their history and their environments, but often do act as friends as well. That kindness isn't just restricted to guides, but is actually in the heart of most. Especially the Volta Region was remarkable in this respect. The biggest Ghanaian cities on the other hand are typical "African" chaotic and tiring, and I didn't stay there for fun. So you will not find a lot of content about them here. Your time is better spent at the coast, with a choice of activities and places to stay - ranging from remote castles overlooking the see to comfortable beachresorts and popular backpacker hangouts.
