Ghana: Kpandu
Torkor lakeshore and shrines of Agbenohoe

From Tafi Atome, I walked in about three hours to Kpandu. While I did not pay a lot of attention to Kpandu Town, the nearby market at Torkor Port, on the shores of Lake Volta, was one of the more lively and colorful I’ve seen in Ghana.

The Catholic Grottos of Agbenohoe

Agbenohoe village near Kpandu town is the site of an important Catholic shrine, set on a hill. There´s a walking trail taking you past about ten whitewashed shrines telling the story of the last hours of Jesus Christ. It's a pleasant and peaceful environment where you can wander around freely.

Kpandu-Torkor market

Rural fishermen, farmers and travelers from all around the region arrive here by all sorts of boats, usually selling their local trade and buying imported goods. There's the Torkor main market which is only mildly interesting, but the extension at the lake shore - just 5 minutes walk - is what you really want to experience! The hustle and bustle is a real spectacle that I probably could have enjoyed the whole day, if it would have been a bit less hot. The highlight of the day was a hilarious happening when a number of cows had to be hand lifted into the wooden boats.

From Kpandu town you´ll easily find a shared taxi to Torkor main market. At the main market is also the ferry office, should you want to board the weekly Lake Volta ferry. Torkor offers also connections to various islets (however most of the shuttles only operate on market days).
