Ghana: Ho, Hoehoe and the Tsatudo Falls

Main towns of Volta region

Ho - with a population of over 72000, is the capital of Volta Region. It´s quite a relaxed town with some great value places to stay and fine bars to drink cold beers. The second town of the region is Hohoe - population over 30000 -, that is a nice enough place to wander around too, although it doesn’t have amazing attractions. But the cooler climate and the respectful and friendly attitude of the locals makes you feel comfortable in both Ho and Hoehoe, especially in comparison with some of the more roudy coastal towns.

In theory both towns are feasible bases for day trips if you have private transport. Tro-tro's are an option too, but there are only few, they take ages to leave the terminal, and stop everywhere. If you rely on these to visit villages like Amedzofe and Tafi Atome, best plan to stay overnight there as early morning and late afternoon are usually the best times of the day for village and nature related activities.

In Hoehoe you can exchange some money into CFA if you are planning to enter Togo through the minor Wli bordercrossing.  Ask around in the larger shops around the terminal.

Tsatsudo Falls

An agreeable and easy destination from Hohoe are the attractive Tsatsudo Falls, near Alavanyo Village. The water plunges down here in no less than five stages and there are two pools. As tourism is not organized here, the standard recommendation applies: First pay the village chief a visit on arrival in Alavanyo. It is common practise to offer a small gift. He will find someone to take you to the falls and look after you. They are easy enough to find though, located close to the main road. At the falls, you can take a fun swim at its base or go up along a muddy trail to the third level and jump down in a lower pool from there - best check if there's sufficient water! By the end of August, the falls were spectacular, but in the dry season they are probably less worth the effort.

Climb the tower when you are in Hohoe

If you have time in Hoehoe, you may want to visit the characteristic pink church, that was built by the Germans some decades ago. From the tower you overlook the town and surroundings in all directions. You can contact the caretaker who lives opposite the entrance door.

Kente cloth weaving in Kpetoe

Kente cloth weaving is amongst the best known traditional crafts of Ghana. Potential buyers may want to visit Kpetoe village where you can observe weavers on almost every corner of the street. The geometrical patterns and the use of multiple bright colours seem to make it complicated, but the pace of work is enormous, I watched in disbelief. The tro-tro from Ho took about 30 minutes and filled up easily.
